Dr. Joseph P. Brennan in 1916Dr. Joseph P. Brennan was President of the Westmeath Men’s Social and Benevolent Association of New York for 14 years, from 1906 – 1922. He was a member for approximately 60 years.

He was appointed a City Commissioner of Education by NYC Mayor John Purroy Mitchel.

Dr. Brennan was a master orator, leader, and influential figure among the Irish community in New York and across Co. Westmeath in Ireland. He was personal friends with Irish Parliamentary Party leader John E. Redmond and he espoused Redmond’s political ideology and strategy both before and after the events of the Easter Rising.

He was also:

  • President of the Parnell Branch of the United Irish League
  • President of the Irish-American League
  • Vice-president of the Municipal Council United Irish League of America
  • Member of the Advisory Board – The Free State (monthly magazine)
